The Women’s Initiative Nurturing Girls’ Strength – WINGS – took flight in November, 2013 when a group of women came together in Celebration to share concerns about the onslaught of negative media and role models influencing girls and young women. We discussed what kinds of messages we want to share with them as they prepare for their future. We vowed to take action to lift them to be courageous in reaching for their dreams, and fearless in pursuing them.
Since then WINGS has flown. Our inaugural event was a birthday party in honor of Susan B. Anthony for 160 women, girls (and men who love them) in Celebration. Our audience asked us to come to Kissimmee, and so our second big event grew WINGS to include many fascinating women from throughout Osceola County.
In 2014, WINGS began a program in Celebration called “Power Lunches” for middle school students to talk about the challenges that face girls every day, and how they can reach out and help each other through them. We are working hard to expand this program to other schools in Osceola County.
WINGS has sponsored students to visit Tallahassee to learn about leadership at the state level, and produced a remarkable and inspiring concert. We are always looking for imaginative ways to empower girls and women to lead stronger, more confident lives. Our hope is that all who are touched by WINGS soar to their highest potential.
