Honor Flight Central Florida serves WWII Veterans by flying them to Washington, D.C. to see their WWII Memorial at no charge to the veteran. Guardians accompany veterans on this one day trip at their own expense to serve one of our nation’s most senior citizens honoring them for their service to our nation at one of its most challenging times. The Celebration Foundation is proud to be a part of this wonderful experience.
Mike Jackson, Celebration Foundation Board Past President, served as Guardian to Carl Tange – a veteran from Good Samaritan on the April 26th, 2014 Central Florida Honor Flight to Washington, DC. The day was filled with special moments, but Mike mentioned a couple that he found particularly touching. The first was on the plane when “mail call” was announced – his veteran Carl had a huge stack of mail from friends and family – letters expressing their gratitude for this service. And secondly, when the flight returned to the Sanford Airport at 11pm, the veterans were met by a huge cheering crowd with a band playing patriotic music. As Mike followed his veteran through the welcoming crowd, he said that it was difficult not to get caught up in the emotion.
“I had heard from other Guardians that this was one of the best days of their lives. After experiencing the day for myself, I can honestly say that it was a truly remarkable experience. I encourage everyone to volunteer for this service!” said Jackson.
