Campus Express, funded by the Celebration Foundation, is designed to have students visit the Technical Education Center Osceola (TECO) and Valencia College campuses through bus tours to help them see the importance of post-secondary education and the possibilities afforded to them after high school.
When Campus Express started in 2012, just over 100 students toured TECO and Valencia.
During the 2013-2014 school year, the number increased tenfold and 1,071 Osceola students visited the campuses.
The program took another leap during the 2014 – 2015 school year and 1,571 Osceola students visited the campuses.
“I think the Campus Express is a great way for students to learn about the opportunities available to them right here in Osceola County,” said Dr. Kathleen Plinske, President of the Osceola and Lake Nona Campuses, Valencia College.
The Celebration Foundation also launched Campus Express Navigators in 2014-2015, a more hands on career exploration opportunity targeted to 5th graders in the district. Kissimmee Elementary had 54 students participate.
“Many of our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and they are not aware of the many career options that are available to them after high school and beyond,” said David Noyes, Principal Kissimmee Elementary School. “The Campus Express Navigators Program was able to create a spark that got the students thinking about what career options they could choose based on their own personal interests. The children could not stop talking about the campus tours to TECO and Valencia College and their energy and enthusiasm was exciting to watch.”
